Our dear mother, Betty Lou Peterson, 92, passed away in the early morning hours of October 26, 2023, at
Pine View Terrace Assisted Living Facility. She was born at home in Black River Falls, WI, on June 13,
1931, to Joseph and Helen (Smith) Peterson and was the oldest of three children: Betty, John, and Melvin.
After graduating from Black River Falls High School, Betty married Robert E. Converse. To this union
three children were born: Norman, David, and Mary. They divorced in 1955 and in 1965, she married
Richard D. Peterson at Little Norway Lutheran Church. To this marriage three children were born:
Thomas, Carol, and Leslie.
For many years Betty worked in her aunt and uncle’s bakery – Rockney’s Bakery, alongside other family
members. Customer service and retail suited Betty. Her last job was with Walmart, retiring when she was
75.
Betty was an excellent cook, baker, canner, seamstress, knitter, crafter. She enjoyed reading and trips to
casinos. Her love for animals ran deep and was unparalleled. She nursed many an animal back to health:
dog, cat, bird, bunny, sheep, calves…you name it…she loved them all. As much as she enjoyed the
various activities and animals, Betty truly loved her children and especially her grandchildren. They
brought great joy to her heart.
Preceding Betty in death were her parents, husband Richard, brother Melvin, and children Carol and
David.
Surviving her are her children: Norman (Cathy) Converse, Mary (Oren) Pengra, Thomas (Kathy)
Peterson, and Leslie Rave. She is further survived by her brother John (Marlene) Peterson, many
grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews
and cousins.
There will be a short graveside service held with family and friends at Little Norway Lutheran Church,
Black River Falls, on Saturday, November 18, at 11:00 a.m. Following the service family and friends are
invited for a time of fellowship and a light lunch in the Little Norway Gathering Room.
The family extends grateful thanks to the staff of Pine View Terrace and St. Croix Hospice for the care
and support they provided to our mother this past year. Their care and professionalism is very much
appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, Mom would truly appreciate donations made directly to the Jackson County Animal
