The Wisconsin DMV has announced a significant increase in the permitted electronic processing
fee, raising it from $19.50 to $38.00. This fee, which has remained unchanged since 2004, is
collected when an EMV partner provides title and registration services through a third-party
electronic processing provider. Since we are required to utilize a third-party electronic processing
provider in order to offer this service at the Black River Falls Police Department, this change
impacts our costs.
Why the Change?
This adjustment reflects the growing costs associated with providing these electronic services.
For context, while the electronic processing fee has remained static since 2004, the title fee has
more than tripled in the same timeframe. The DMV’s decision to raise the maximum fee to
$38.00 brings it more in line with current operational costs.
What Does This Mean for Customers?
EMV partners are permitted—but not required—to increase their fees up to the new maximum.
We have chosen NOT to charge the maximum amount allowed, as we want to offer this service at
an affordable rate. However, due to the increased cost from our third-party electronic processor,
DealerTrack, we must increase our electronic processing fee to cover their additional operating
costs.
Title and Registrations will increase from $19.50 to $30.00.
Renewals will increase from $10.00 to $12.00.
These fees are in addition to the DMV’s standard fees associated with these types of transactions
and will take effect on October 1st, 2024.
