Black River Falls Common Council members met in special session Wednesday, with several city department updates on the agenda. The council authorized the fire chief to sell or donate a retired 2015 Mercedes Sprinter ambulance, known as Rescue Two. The vehicle could be donated to the Jackson County Animal Shelter or sold through Wisconsin Surplus. The council also approved filling a full-time General Laborer and Mechanic position following the upcoming retirement of longtime street department employee Greg Rush. Police Chief Travis Brown introduced new patrol officer Jacob Featherly and Kor, a Dutch Shepherd trained in narcotics detection. The pair will attend certification training in September, including work on tracking. Council members also discussed a proposed TIF facade improvement grant for 34 South First Street. The project is estimated at more than 288-thousand dollars, with a grant request of more than 144-thousand. The council discussed a possible agreement requiring conditions on the property before any grant is approved. A motion to draft that agreement and consider a grant of up to 40 percent of eligible costs failed due to lack of a quorum, with one alderperson abstaining.
