The Federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides $65 billion to connect all Americans to high-
speed broadband internet that is affordable and reliable. The program is known as BEAD –
Broadband Equity Access and Deployment.
Wisconsin will get a little over $1 billion. Almost all of Jackson County will qualify for funding to
bring high-speed internet to residents.
This process is very important to local Town government. In preparing applications, internet
service providers are required to conduct outreach to residents and local units of government.
Local residents can help in two ways:
Take the speed test from your home computer (not cell phone). Search Jackson County Wis
to get to the website. From the top menu, click on Broadband, then Speedtest. Your results
will be automatically recorded.
Contact your Town Board members to voice your support for faster internet.
BEAD is a multi-step process. In early 2024, a list of eligible locations/addresses will be
published, and local residents will have the chance to challenge the accuracy of the maps. In
Summer 2024, internet service providers will start to apply for BEAD funds to connect
underserved areas. There will be at least 3 rounds of grant awards.
“The Jackson County Broadband Work Group will share more information as it becomes
available,” stated Jeff Amo, Chair, Jackson County Board of Supervisors. “We will work with
residents, Town governments and internet service providers to assure that Jackson County gets
its fair share of Wisconsin’s $1 billion.”
The Jackson County Broadband Work Group meets monthly, usually the 2 nd Thursday of the
month at 1 p.m. A virtual option is always available. Contact County Clerk/Administrative
Coordinator Cindy Altman for details.
