(Superior, WI)  —  Superior Mayor Jim Payne says signing his name to a document was a very small thing, but he thinks it’s the most important thing he’s ever done.  That action during a Thursday ceremony made official the land transfer of a burial ground on Wisconsin Point to the Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa.  Fond du Lac Chairman Kevin DuPuis and Payne signed the document.  The transfer includes the St. Francis Cemetery where nearly 200 Ojibwe people were buried after being exhumed more than a century ago.  Superior City Council President Jenny Van Sickle started the effort last year to return the ancestral site to the tribe.
