The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is inviting library patrons to explore the outdoors through the Check Out Wisconsin State Parks At Your Library program. The initiative allows library cardholders to check out a free day pass to Wisconsin state parks, forests and recreation areas.

Now entering its fifth year, the program is a partnership between the DNR, the Department of Public Instruction and libraries across the state. What began as a pilot with 20 libraries in 2022 has grown significantly. In 2024, more than 160 libraries at over 200 locations offered free daily vehicle admission passes.

The program also expanded last year to include specialized libraries, with the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Wisconsin–Superior among the first to participate.

In addition to the day pass, some libraries provide informational kits that include maps, accessibility details and other park resources. The DNR encourages visitors to plan ahead before heading to a state park.

Libraries and community organizations interested in participating can find more information on the Check Out Wisconsin State Parks At Your Library webpage.
