Elevated fire danger across Wisconsin has sparked 63 wildfires over the past weekend, burning 135 acres, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

In response, the DNR has suspended burn permits in 24 counties where it holds burn restriction authority. With continued dry weather and strong winds forecast through Wednesday, fire danger remains at high to very high levels statewide.

The DNR is deploying all available fire equipment, reallocating resources to high-risk areas, and placing an incident management team on standby. The Wisconsin Army National Guard is also prepared, with two Blackhawk helicopter crews ready to assist with wildfire suppression.

Spring is Wisconsin’s most critical fire season, as dry grasses and leaf litter create hazardous fuel conditions. So far in 2025, the DNR has responded to nearly 500 wildfires, double the average, with nearly half caused by debris burning.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, and if burning is necessary, to check daily restrictions, follow permit rules, and make absolutely sure fires are completely extinguished — use water, stir thoroughly, and recheck for embers.
