Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is calling a federal court ruling a victory for public safety after a judge blocked the Trump administration from attaching immigration-enforcement conditions to federal public safety grants.
A federal judge in Rhode Island ruled the conditions unlawful and permanently barred the administration from enforcing them.
The dispute began in 2025, when the administration attempted to require states to comply with certain immigration demands before receiving federal crime victim assistance funding. A coalition of states, including Wisconsin, successfully challenged those requirements.
The latest ruling protects millions of dollars in additional funding for Wisconsin, including 3-point-2 million dollars for law enforcement, approximately 2-point-1 million dollars for efforts to reduce gun violence, and more than 800-thousand dollars for juvenile justice programs.
Attorney General Kaul says states should not have to choose between funding that helps protect their communities and complying with unlawful federal conditions.
Wisconsin joined attorneys general from more than 20 other states in the lawsuit.
