Details of the Trempealeau County homicide in the Town of Ettrick have been shared via the criminal complaint. It indicates that while 36 year-old Kyle Dahl, of Ettrick, appeared to have been killed in a car crash May 15th, the investigation revealed otherwise. Investigators with the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department asked area residents for surveillance footage and received video showing a red sedan following Dahl’s car. A witness told authorities that Todd Gieck, of Melrose, was the driver of the red sedan and that he was “high amped” and “fast paced.”
The witness noted that Dahl’s vehicle initially slowed down as Gieck looked at a boat left along Highway 53, which seemed to irritate Gieck who later drove his car to catch up with the victim’s car, passed it on the right, parked along the road, allegedly shot out the rear window of Dahl’s car, and then drove away in the opposite direction.
Deputies who examined the scene determined Dahl was struck by a “tumbling bullet” that hit him above his right eye. Dahl was taken to a hospital where he was still alive but later died of the “non-survivable injury.”
Gieck appeared in court Friday for a bail and bond hearing. Bond was unable to be set until a new judge is assigned to the case. Trempealeau County Judge Rian Radtke is recusing himself as Dahl was an employee of the county that worked closely with the court system.
