The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has awarded a brownfield cleanup grant to the city of Cuba City in Grant County to help redevelop a former assisted living facility site.

The grant, worth up to nearly $132,000, will fund the removal and disposal of petroleum-contaminated soil at the property on South Washington Street. City officials say the contamination came from former fuel storage tanks located at the site.

The funding comes through the DNR’s Ready for Reuse program, which helps communities clean up brownfield properties — sites where redevelopment is complicated by contamination concerns.

Cuba City acquired the property in 2024 and plans to redevelop it into new housing near the downtown business district, with additional commercial development also expected. Local economic development leaders say the project could create new opportunities and services for residents.

The Ready for Reuse program is funded through a revolving loan fund grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
