The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters that the deadline to apply for a 2025 elk hunting license is fast approaching—applications must be submitted by May 31.

The state’s growing elk population supports limited hunting opportunities in two regions: the Clam Lake Elk Range, which has hosted hunts since 2018, and the Black River Elk Range, which opened for hunting in 2024. Each area is about 70% public land, offering strong access and habitat for elk hunters.

The 2025 elk season opens October 18, with quotas set at:

Clam Lake Elk Range: 8 antlered elk (split between Tribal and state hunters)

Black River Elk Range: 4 antlered and 5 antlerless elk

Hunters must choose one range when applying. All applications go into a random drawing, with equal chances for all entrants. Antlerless licenses will be awarded after the antlered drawing, and applicants may accept or decline those without affecting future eligibility.

Applications are available online at GoWild.WI.gov or at licensed agents statewide. The hunt is open only to Wisconsin residents, and those drawn must complete an elk hunter education course.

Each $10 application includes a $7 contribution to elk management and habitat conservation.
