Frederick E. Staff, age 81, of Eau Claire, formerly of Whitehall, completed his earthly journey on
Tuesday, October 17, 2023 surrounded by his family after a long battle with Parkinson’s
Disease.
Fred was born on April 21, 1942 in Whitehall. One of nine children, he grew up on the family
farm in Big Slough. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Pigeon Falls.
Fred graduated from the Taylor High School and was drafted into the United States Army where
he served for two years. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he attended the
patrol academy to become a trooper for the Wisconsin State Patrol, a career that spanned 30
years. At times during his life he worked at Sampson Heating and Air Conditioning for his
brother-in-law, Donald Sampson. Fred retired at the age of 55 to enjoy traveling, fishing,
camping, hunting and spending time with his family. He treasured time spent with his grandson,
Kyle, on their trips to Alaska. Fred was happiest when surrounded by family. He was generous
with his time and took great pride in his ability to help others.
Fred was a devout Christian who was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Whitehall
and later joined Trinity Lutheran in Eau Claire.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Jan; his two daughters, Pamela (Jeff) Erickson and Michelle
(Kevin) Smith; four grandchildren, Kyle Staff, Luke Erickson, Ava Erickson and Cooper Smith;
his great-grandchildren, Ila and Jack Staff; his brothers, Terry (Barb), Phillip (Lillian), Creighton

friends.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Jens and Ila; his first wife, Dorothy; his sister,
Sharon Sampson; brothers, James and Johnny and numerous other family members and
friends who we know were there to welcome him at Heaven’s gate.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving dad, beloved brother and reliable friend.
Fred’s favorite role was that of proud grandpa and great-grandpa.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers through hospice and the VA for their
compassionate care.
