Naloxone, more commonly referred to by its brand name, Narcan, is a medicine that can rapidly reverse an overdose from opioids – including heroin, fentanyl, and
prescription opioid medications – by blocking the effects of opioids. It can restore normal breathing within two to three minutes in a person whose breath has slowed, or even stopped, as a result of an opioid overdose. More than one dose of Narcan may be required when stronger opioids like fentanyl are involved.
Narcan will not harm someone if they are overdosing on drugs other than opioids, so it is safe to use if you think someone is overdosing. Narcan is safe for children, pregnant women, and pets. If you give someone Narcan, stay with them until
emergency help arrives.
To learn more about Naloxone/Narcan, register for a free community Narcan Training, courtesy of the Jackson County Public Health Department in partnership
with the Ho-Chunk Nation, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, and Black River Falls Public Library. This training will be provided at the Library located at 222
Fillmore Street in Black River Falls on Wednesday, January 17 at 5:30 p.m. A limited supply of free Narcan kits will be available to attendees. To register, please call the Library at 715-284-4112.
