With deep love and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Gary Robert Olson who left this world on March 30, 2025. Gary was born on December 2, 1953, in Jackson, Michigan, to Dale (Mickey) Olson and Agaytha (Gay)(Hagen) Olson.
His early years were filled with adventure and a strong sense of family, especially after the Olsons relocated to Black River Falls, Wisconsin from Michigan. There, they became beloved members of the community, known for running several local establishments, including the NorthSide Grocery Store and the much-loved ThunderBird Recreation Area, (now known as The Loon Lodge, and The Mug Restaurant/bar in Hatfield WI.
A member of the Black River Falls High School Class of 1972, Gary’s life soon took a new direction when he met and married Martha Drescher (Beyer) of Neillsville, WI. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Melany Olson (Remitz) of Oconomowoc—Answering the call to serve his country, Gary joined the Army National Guard, dedicating over 20 years to the 196th Service and Supply Company (now known as 106th Quartermaster Supply Company). His service reflected his sense of duty, loyalty, and pride.
Professionally, Gary was a master welder at D&S Manufacturing for nearly 20 years. His precision, craftsmanship, left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him.
But Gary’s legacy lies beyond his work—He came alive outdoors—camping, canoeing, and fishing brought him peace and joy, especially in the company of loved ones. With a twinkle in his eye and a clever joke always at the ready, Gary had a gift for making people smile, even on the toughest days, as reflected by members of his care Team at River Road Estates, a beautiful facility in Sparta where he spent his final years.
A lifelong lover of music, the sounds of Pink Floyd often filled his homes and heart—becoming the backdrop of countless memories.
Gary’s presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will echo on—into every story told, every song played, every ripple across a still lake, and every jukebox tune that he played to liven up the place!
He is survived by his father, Mickey (Dale) Olson; one daughter, Melany Olson-Remtiz (Rob Remitz) of Oconomowoc; his grandson Dylan Ramey (Samantha) of Neillsville, WI; his “surprise” granddaughter 14 months, Tinsley Remitz Oconomowoc, and his three cherished great-grandchildren: Ryder, Odin, and Franklin. He is also survived by his brother, Larry Olson (Carmen) of Black River Falls, WI.
