The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters and trappers to get ready for several season openers this October.

The DNR says there are five key dates throughout the month when seasons begin, including duck and coot hunting in the Southern Zone on October 4, the youth deer hunt on October 11, and a wide variety of game and furbearer seasons starting October 18. More trapping seasons open on October 25.

Hunters are encouraged to double-check season dates, make sure they have the proper licenses and stamps, and review safety rules before heading into the field.

The DNR also highlights resources like its mobile-friendly hunting and trapping webpages, fall hunting forecasts, and the Public Access Lands map for planning trips.

Officials remind hunters to follow the four basic firearm safety rules: treat every gun as if it’s loaded, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, be certain of your target and what’s beyond, and keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.

First-time hunters and trappers must also complete approved education courses unless covered by exemptions.

The DNR wishes all hunters and trappers a safe and successful fall season.
