Spring has sprung, and for many Wisconsinites, so have asthma symptoms. During Asthma Awareness Month, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services is reminding families that help is available. State health officials say pollen and other spring allergens can trigger asthma attacks, especially in children. In Wisconsin, about 550 children are hospitalized each year for asthma-related issues, while nearly 5,000 visit emergency departments. DHS says asthma can be managed with proper treatment and an asthma action plan. Programs like the Asthma-Safe Homes Program are also available to help families reduce asthma triggers and better manage symptoms.
