The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is proposing an incidental take authorization for the endangered eastern massasauga rattlesnake as part of a water control structure replacement project at Townline Flowage in Jackson County.

The project would replace four aging water control structures to improve drainage capacity. Because eastern massasauga snakes have been confirmed near the site, DNR officials say construction could unintentionally harm some individual snakes.

To reduce impacts, work would take place outside the species’ breeding season, and a biologist would be present during construction activities.

The DNR says the project is not expected to jeopardize the state’s eastern massasauga population and provides public benefits that justify moving forward.

The public can review project documents and submit comments on potential impacts to the species through July 7, 2026, to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
