The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking public comment on a proposed dike repair project in Sauk County that could affect the state-endangered Blanchard’s cricket frog.
The DNR plans to repair the Long Lake Dike along the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway after spring flooding caused erosion and structural concerns. Because the endangered frog has been confirmed near the project site, the agency is proposing an incidental take authorization, allowing for the unintentional harm or loss of some frogs while requiring measures to minimize impacts.
Those protections include seasonal work restrictions, an environmental monitor to search for frogs before construction, and the use of lightweight equipment.
The DNR says the project is not expected to jeopardize the species’ long-term survival. Written public comments will be accepted through July 22.
