Sheriff Duane Waldera shared an update on the Jackson County Jail/Justice Center project at Wednesday’s Black River Falls Common Council Meeting. The sheriff said a Law Enforcement Committee work group has been formed to discuss current directives and working through site locations. Currently, the group is considering a jail only construction project. Three conceptual jail designs were shared that would require the closing of a city street. One option closes a portion of North Third Street, another a portion of Harrison Street, and a third option closes a portion of North Fourth Street. City Administrator Brad Chown told the Sheriff that City Department Heads felt closing North Third Street was the
least favorable due to traffic and fire responses. Alderpersons Kylee Wussow and Desiree Gearing-Lancaster noted concerns for all three options from their constituents. Mayor Jay Eddy noted the city and county are partners and that the city would like to support the project if the jail is built within the city with the least amount of impact and greatest benefit to all parties…with public input.
