It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Jackson County Sheriff’s Office K9 Gus. In the past several days it was noted that Gus appeared to not be feeling well and was taken to his vet where it was discovered he had terminal cancer. On October 1, 2025 Gus passed away with loved ones and friends at his side.
Deputy Mark Moan and K9 Gus (real name Lt. Dan), have been a canine team at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for numerous years. During their time together, as a team at the Sheriff’s Office, they have been deployed numerous times for canine trails. Generally, these trails were in an attempts to find missing persons. In addition to their work as a canine trailing team, they were an active part of the canine unit and could commonly be found at many public events including the Jackson County Fair, Student Government Day and Trunk or Treat events.
On behalf of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, we’d like to thank Deputy Mark Moan and K9 Gus for their service to Jackson County as well as express our condolences to Deputy Moan, the Moan Family and all who knew and loved Gus.
