Joan Elizabeth Boland, 79, of Arcadia passed away October 8, 2023, at her home surrounded by her
family.
Joan was born at St Joseph’s Hospital in Arcadia on April 9, 1944, to John and Florence (Abts) Grossell of
Fountain City, WI. Joan attended St Mary’s Catholic Grade School and graduated from Cochrane-
Fountain City High School in 1962. Joan married Thomas Boland on January 22, 1966, at Immaculate
Conception Church in Fountain City, WI. Joan worked at Boland Manufacturing in Winona, MN for 4
years before she met her husband. After she raised her family, she worked for Schlesser’s Greenhouse,
the Arcadia County Club and for Arcadia Public Schools for 20 years as a lunch lady. Joan loved to cook,
bake, take car rides, irritate family and friends with her quick-witted comebacks, travel and play bingo
with her friends at various establishments. Joan loved attending her grandchildren’s various sporting
events, concerts, and graduations. Joan was well known for her famous potato salad, which she made
for family gatherings and various community events. Joan was a previous member of Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Catholic Church and a current member of Holy Family Parish.
Joan is survived by her 6 children and 14 grandchildren: Karry (Doug) Scow, of Arcadia and children:
Brea and Brennan; Thomas (Jerrilynn) Boland of Holmen, and children: Mitchell and Shawn; Erin
Davis (Matt Hendren) of Holmen, and children: Emerald and Carter; Stacie (Aaron) Aldrich of
Chisago City, MN and children: Isaac, Isabella and Eva; Greg (Erin) Boland of Arcadia, and children:
Marshall, Cameron and Sacia; and Ryan (Carrie) Boland of Arcadia, and children: Zoey and Teagan;
sister: Kris (Scott) Ressie of Fountain City; brothers: Ken (Gerry) Grossell of Osakis, MN and Jack (Diane)
Grossell of Fountain City; Godson: Sean Ressie of Eagan, MN; and many other nieces and nephews and
Joan’s special “therapy” dog Tootsie.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Tom; parents; sister: Arlene (Ben) Wiench; and brothers,
Byron and Robert.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to St Croix Hospice and Judy (Paul) Boland for
the excellent care given to their mother. The care and compassion shown to Joan was greatly
appreciated.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2023, at Holy Family Catholic
Church, Arcadia, with Father Kyle Laylan officiating. Friends may call from 9 to 10:40 a.m. prior to the
service at church. Public Rosary will be recited beginning at 10:40 a.m. at church. Burial will be at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Glencoe, rural Arcadia. To express condolences to her family online, please
