Larry “Butch” W. Olson of Tomah, formerly Black River Falls, passed away Friday August 28, 2026, at the Serenity House, Tomah surrounded by family. Butch was born December 14, 1960, in Black River Falls to Lawrence and Rita (Rowlee) Olson. He finished eighth grade and decided to live a life that could not be neatly boxed up or defined by rules. A true free spirit, he marched to the beat of an entirely different drum and found comfort living in his primitive home which had electricity, wood stove, outdoor toilet, hauled water and a dog named Max. Butch worked at various jobs involving pulping, mossing, and hired hand doing odd jobs. Butch moved to Manor Apartments in Tomah June 2023 and adapted to city living along with the endearing Manor community. Larry “Butch” had a generous heart, giving nature, free spirit, and was very proud of his children, his parents and family.

Butch is survived by his children Amy (Travis) Phillips Verken of Hillsboro, Bridget Olson of Winona, Logan (Fiancé Nicole) Flood of Kaukauna, 11 grandchildren, Sisters LaVonne Smith of Tomah, Deb (Tim) Frost of Warrens, brother Glen Olson of Black River Falls along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother-in-law, Douglas C Smith, and an ex-sister-in-law Debra Olson.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of Tomah Health Palliative Care and Hospice Touch for the care and support given to Butch.
