LaVern Aaron Lighthizer, age 89, died suddenly, and unexpectedly at his home Monday morning, January 31, 2022.
Vern was born April 3, 1932 at the family home in Augusta WI to Walter and Esther (Bissell) Lighthizer. Straight out of high school Vern decided to serve his country, which he did so proudly enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps., launching from Camp Lejeune and serving from 1950 to 1953 during the Korean War where he fought and honored his country having been the recipient of two ‘Purple Hearts’ before returning to Camp Lejeune North Carolina. While enlisted he learned the electricians trade and soon excelled at it.
Upon returning to the states he went to work for American Motors and then the Chrysler Motor Co. Upon coming back to the Black River Falls area Vern went to work for John “NotSo” Quick at Quick Electric and for Jim Olson. He was very good at what he did.
Vern met Darlene in 1988 through an exchange of letters through the ‘Friendship Club’, and in March of that year traveled with Dee and her parents to Branson MO. Soon after on July 7, 1990 Vern and Dee were joined in holy matrimony. Over the years Vern had seven different dogs he loved as late in life children. He had great sense of humor. He loved to go deer hunting but claimed not to have enough patience for fishing. He was patient enough to coffee clutch with old friends like Leonard Olson and others.
Surviving LaVern are his wife Darlene “Dee”; his children Ellen (Norm) Hartlieb, Tammy, James Lavern Lighthizer and Jon Lighthizer; his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother David Lighthizer; his sister Ovella Eileen Troxel and many niece nephews other relatives and friends.
