Maria Wogh (née Dickhaut), beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed peacefully from this life to the next on Monday, December 16, 2024, attended by her loving husband, Peter, who had cared for her unfailingly since she entered in-home hospice care in March of this year.
Maria was born in Neu Munchen, Ukraine on June 1, 1937, to Friedrich and Emma (Fuhrmann) Dickhaut. Her family, which included siblings Freidrich, Elsa, Barbara, Lydia and Eduard, emigrated to The United States in May 1952. The family settled in Melrose, WI, where she met her future husband, Peter Wogh. During their courtship they exchanged many letters back and forth after Peter joined the U.S. Air Force. They were wed December 28, 1955 in St. Paul, MN.
During their time in the Air Force, they lived in Iowa, Oklahoma and Alaska. In 1969, they returned to Wisconsin to attend to their own aging parents and took over the family farm outside Taylor. Together with their children, Peter and Maria built a thriving hog farm from the ground up. Maria spent many hours delivering and caring for litters of baby piglets, all while raising 6 children.
Maria was dedicated to her family. She was a loving and supportive wife, a nurturing and involved mother, and later, a proud and doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a gift for mothering and babysat and welcomed many children into her home over the years. She was called, “Mom” by many neighborhood kids and friends of her own children. She loved seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren learn to ride bikes and enjoy learning about nature and berry picking with Grandma.
Maria was a member of Trempealeau Valley Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ladies Aid and a Sunday School and Confirmation teacher. She enjoyed gardening and tended a colorful variety of flowers on their property, including roses, gladiolas, dahlias, cosmos, hollyhocks, petunias and more. She exhibited her prize-winning flowers and houseplants for many years at the Jackson County Fair. In addition, she knitted and crochet beautiful blankets, afghans, sweaters, socks, mittens and elaborate doilies, which also won numerous awards at the fair. She was never so happy as when she received news of another expected baby and began working on a new baby blanket. Her crocheted Lord’s Prayer was gifted to and is displayed in the Taylor Lutheran Church.
In later years, Maria enjoyed sitting in her sunroom, filled with a variety of potted plants, foliage, succulents and roses blooming through the winter. She was fond of her game shows and loved watching the birds at her bird feeders, while she crocheted or did word puzzles.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Elsa; her son, Robert and her daughter, Margaret.
She is survived by her husband, Peter Wogh; siblings, Freidrich, Lydia and Barbara; children, Kenneth Wogh, Barbara (Robert) Sprau, Michael (Christine Hjornevik) Wogh and Therisa (Chad) Gibbons; 13 grandchildren, Stacy (Matt) Nash, Eric Sprau, Amy Sprau, Neil Sprau, Christopher (Pauline) Burnett, Elizabeth (Kevin) Hovey, James (Diana) Burnett, Boone (Kaitlyn) Wogh, Deborah Wogh, Ryan (Hailey Holum) Wogh, Mackenzie(Kyle) Hoffman, Ivan Teter and Bianca Teter; 22 great-grandchildren, Noah Nash, Elena Nash, Lucy Nash, Jaxon Russell, Isabella Russell, Emily Hovey, Rachael Hovey, Soren Hovey, Augustus Hovey, Louis Burnett, Anelica Burnett, Phoebe Burnett, Shealynn Burnett, Naomi Burnett, Brooklyn Wogh, Teagan Wogh, Henry Wogh, Jameson McNulty, Joselyn McNulty, Jace McNulty, Jade McNulty and Matthew Hoffman, as well as numerous nieces, great-nieces, nephews and grand-nephews
