Martha Ellen (Johnson) Felt, age 74, of Madison, died on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 in her
home.
Martha was born on October 15. 1949 in Whitehall to Willie A. and Florence E. (Goplin)
Johnson.
She attended the Whitehall Public Schools, graduating in 1968. Following graduation she
attended Luther College in Decorah, IA for one year, then Massey School of Fashion Design in
Atlanta, GA. During her years at Massey, she traveled Europe and developed her appreciation
of the British culture, returning several times. Martha was especially fond of the beauty of the
“Lake District” in Cumbria, England.
Martha married Gilford Moen Evans on September 21, 1974 in Whitehall and they later
divorced. On September 28, 1986 she married Robert Felt at Olrich Gardens in Madison.
Although they later divorced, they remained great friends and supportive of each other.
Early in her career, Martha was employed by many fashion stores. More recently she was
employed by the University of Wisconsin Hospital’s Home Nutrition Program and Central
Supply, retiring in January of 2023. Martha took great pride in being a “good worker”, a
phrase she took to heart from her grandmother’s obituary.
Martha enjoyed walking, reading, music, art, watching historical drama and completing the
New York Times daily crossword puzzle. She will be remembered for her generous nature and
her giving ways. Martha routinely made donations to numerous charities and organizations.
Martha is survived by her brother, Andrew (Mary) Johnson; a nephew, Lucas (Ashley)
Johnson; two great-nephews, Preston and Henry Johnson and a great-niece, Lily Johnson.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ludvig and
Ruth Goplin and Theodore and Ida Johnson along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be held at the Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall on Saturday, March 2, 2024 from
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. officiated by Scott Brown,
SAM.
Memorials may be directed to the Friends of the Whitehall Library or the Whitehall High
School music department.
