Mary Lee Bue of Edgerton, WI, passed away on February 26 after a courageous year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on March 28, 1942, in Sparta, WI to Harold and Marian Wike, Mary attended Melrose Area Schools and later the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. In August 1963, she married Gene Bue, also from Melrose, WI.
Mary dedicated 35 years of her career to teaching kindergarten and first grade in the Edgerton Public Schools from 1964 until 1999, impacting multiple generations of families. After retiring, she and Gene moved back to Melrose, WI to revitalize the Shake Hollow Homestead. Following Gene’s passing in 2018, Mary returned to Edgerton, where she reconnected with old friends and made many new ones.
Mary was an exceptional seamstress and quilter, but her legacy will be cherished through her distinctive Christmas stockings, which will keep her memory alive for years to come. She was also a passionate reader and loved to travel. In 2017, Mary received the prestigious Jackson Women in History award, recognizing her contributions to the Black River Falls area.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gene in 2018. She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Hessian of Edgerton, WI and Jane (Jim) Helgestad of Dayton, MN along with her four grandsons, Jedd, Max, Nick, and Sam who brought her immense joy.
A quiet philanthropist, Mary supported numerous local charities and organizations. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to Agrace Hospice or Brown Paws Rescue. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, March 28 at Henry Street Social from 1-4pm. Thank you to Apfel Ehlert Funeral Home for their assistance with arrangements.
