LA CROSSE, Wis. ― Mayo Clinic Health System Family Medicine Residency Program in La Crosse remains  ranked No. 1  in the state of Wisconsin, No. 1  in the Midwest and No. 8 overall in the U.S. on Doximity’s 2023 Residency Navigator. “The continued recognition for our residency program is very exciting,” says John Merfeld, M.D, residency program director, Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse. “We are committed to providing an excellent education for the next generation of family physicians, and we are so grateful for the incredible work of our faculty and staff, the resident physicians, and the organization to make our program what it is.” Program rank is determined by three factors:

  1. Resident and recent alumni satisfaction.
  2. Reputation among board-certified family medicine physicians.

Not to be outdone, Mayo Clinic Health System’s Family Medicine Residency Program in Eau Claire is ranked No. 2 in the state of Wisconsin, No. 3 in the Midwest, and No.12 in the U.S.  

In Minnesota, Mayo Clinic Health System’s Family Residency program in Mankato is listed No. 2 in the state, No. 5 in the Midwest and No. 15 nationally.  Family Medicine Residency Program colleagues in Rochester and Jacksonville also did exceptionally well.

Rochester ranked 1st in state, 2nd in the Midwest and 9th in the nation. Jacksonville ranked 1st in the state, 4th in the region and 20th in the nation. This places all Mayo Clinic Health System Residency Programs among the top twenty places to train to be a family physician, out of more than 750 programs nationally.

There are currently 18 residents in the three-year training program. Many residency graduates in the past have taken full-time positions across all of Mayo Clinic Health System locations. “The demand for family medicine physicians around the country has skyrocketed, and you will have multiple opportunities for a great position when you complete your training with us,” adds Dr. Merfeld.
