Merlin “Mert” McWilliams died at home on June 16, 2025, at the age of 90.
Merlin was born at home in May Coulee, rural Hixton, to James and Julia (Thomley)
McWilliams on November 6, 1934. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran
faith, a faith he would carry throughout his life. In 1953, Mert graduated from Hixton
High School.
Merlin farmed in Beaver Creek, Jackson County, on the home farm until moving to
Pigeon Falls. Mert was then employed by a Black River Falls auction service, a job he
really enjoyed.
In 1987 he married Virginia Krohn; they later divorced. However, they remained together
until his death.
Survivors include Jean Schroeder, his sister; two nieces, Sara (Tony) Warmka and Rita
(Wade) Lambrigtsen; and five great-nieces and nephews: Greta, Roman, Naomi, Aaron,
and Mia, as well as his ex-wife, Virginia Krohn, and other beloved family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Jim (1972) and Julia (1977) McWilliams, and
brother-in-law Ardell Schroeder.
His family wants to thank Shaleen for her care and attention during his final years. They
also thank the Pigeon Falls Community for all their assistance.
Visitation will be held at the Upper Pigeon Creek Lutheran Church on Wednesday, July
9 th , from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, burial
will take place at the Upper Pigeon Creek Lutheran Cemetery, and all are invited to the
church for luncheon and fellowship.
