The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs will conduct Military Funeral Honors for Civil War veteran Casper Zinthefer on Saturday, June 20th, at noon at Corpus Christi Catholic Cemetery in Marshfield. The ceremony is being held at the request of Zinthefer’s great-granddaughter, Fran LeMahieu.

Zinthefer immigrated from Germany to New York in 1856 and enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 with Company G of the 173rd New York Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in the head during fighting at Port Hudson, Louisiana, in 1863 and later served with the Veterans Reserve Corps in Baltimore for the remainder of the Civil War.

After the war, Zinthefer moved to Wisconsin in 1870 and spent the rest of his life in the state. He died in Marshfield on March 4, 1904. Saturday’s ceremony will recognize his military service more than 120 years after his passing.
