A 37-year-old woman from Wilton has died and five others were injured when a vehicle struck an Amish buggy on
Friday.
At approximately 3:35pm on 9/4/2026, the Monroe County 911 Communications Center received a report of the crash
occurred on State Hwy 131 between County Hwy A and Irondale Ave, in the Township of Tomah.
Emergency responders transported the injured parties to the hospital, however one of the occupants of the buggy later
succumbed to her injuries and died.
During the initial stages of the investigation, deputies determined that both vehicles were traveling southbound up the
hill when a 38-year-old woman from Tomah, driving a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas struck the buggy. The driver of the
Volkswagen advised she had a sneezing fit just prior to the accident and hadn’t seen the buggy. The driver was also
trapped in her vehicle but was later able to get out before being transported to the hospital.
Four other occupants in the buggy, ranging from 18-months old to 24-years-old, received serious injuries and remain
hospitalized. The driver of the Volkswagen was transported to the hospital but was later released.
Names of those involved are not being released at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
Hwy 131 was closed for about 2 hours while emergency responders worked the scene.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office on scene were the Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin DNR, Tomah Ambulance, Wilton
Ambulance, Ft. McCoy Ambulance, Oakdale Fire Department, Wilton Fire Department, EmpliflyAir, Monroe County 911
Communications Center and the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the families and community affected by this tragic
accident.
