The Monroe County Health Department is encouraging parents, caregivers, and other trusted adults to take part in the Monroe County Small Talks Challenge, a local effort inspired by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) Small Talks campaign. The challenge aims to help families build confidence in talking with children about alcohol and other substances early and often.
The statewide Small Talks campaign promotes having conversations about substance use before problems arise. The Monroe County Small Talks Challenge brings this message to the local community by providing families with conversation prompts on a variety of topics, including substance use, healthy decision-making, feelings, and relationships.
Families can participate by signing up at https://mailchi.mp/b7321c027352/small-talks-challenge . Registered families will receive 15 conversation prompts throughout November, delivered every other day to help spark meaningful discussions between parents and children. Families who participate will receive a family pack of four movie tickets to Sparta Cinema 6.
Conversations don’t need to be long or cover everything at once. Everyday moments, such as driving in the car, preparing a meal, or spending time together, can provide natural opportunities to talk. Listening without judgement and keeping conversations going over time can help children feel comfortable turning to trusted adults for guidance.
The Monroe County Health Department encourages families and community partners to support these conversations and share the Small Talks campaign with others.
