During the week of April 7-13, 2025, we celebrate National Public Health Week. Monroe County Health Department (MCHD) has been serving this community since 1921 and has a mission “to empower our community to improve overall health through prevention, education, and collaboration.”
Public health works to promote and protect the health of people and the communities in which they live, learn, work, and play. While doctors treat people when they are already sick, public health tries to prevent people from getting sick in the first place. MCHD provides services to our county’s residents across many areas, including Healthy Families, Environmental Health, Public Health Preparedness, and Community Health. From the clean water we drink to the air we breathe, public health initiatives are the unseen foundation of our everyday lives. Whether it’s food safety inspections at local restaurants, preventing the spread of disease through vaccination and education on hygiene practices, or providing education and resources for safe sleep practices and car seat safety checks, our staff works to meet the needs of our county’s residents. As a member of many community partnerships, MCHD works with others to make a greater impact in Monroe County.
In 2024, MCHD staff attended over 20 community education events, followed up on 839 communicable disease cases, investigated 19 potential human health hazards, held 43 influenza vaccine clinics, administered 891 vaccines, served 1,191 WIC participants, and distributed 54 car seats to income-eligible families. MCHD staff also helped coordinate several first-annual events, including Slide into Safety, the Monroe County Mental Wellness Fair, and Be the Light Walk/Run.
In 2025, MCHD will continue focusing efforts on focus areas identified through our Community Health Improvement Plan, including mental health, alcohol and other drug use, and safe and affordable housing. Our staff will also begin providing the annual inspections for Monroe County’s eating establishments, hotels and lodging, swimming pools, and campgrounds.
