New electrical and plumbing safety codes will take effect across Wisconsin on September 1.
The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services announced the updates this week, saying the changes are designed to improve safety in both residential and commercial buildings.
Beginning September 1, all electrical and plumbing plans submitted to the state or its delegated review agents must comply with the new requirements.
The updated plumbing code addresses inconsistencies between current state regulations, other department rules, and national standards already adopted by Wisconsin. Meanwhile, the revised electrical code adopts the 2023 National Electrical Code, replacing standards based on the 2017 edition, with some modifications to align with Wisconsin law and state procedures.
DSPS Secretary Dan Hereth says state codes are critical public safety tools and that the updates will help create safer buildings and communities across Wisconsin. He also thanked advisory committee members, industry representatives, and department staff who helped develop the changes.
The updated code rules are scheduled to be published June 29 and become effective September 1. Beginning October 1, the new standards will also be reflected on state trades licensing exams administered by DSPS and Pearson VUE.
Additional information and the updated code rules are available through the Wisconsin Legislature website.
