The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding the public that registration is now open for the Run for the Trees: Happy Little 5K.
The virtual race is inspired by artist Bob Ross, with proceeds supporting tree planting and forest health efforts across Wisconsin.

The event is open to everyone. Participants can walk, run, skate, cycle, or use a mobility device to complete the 3.1-mile course at a location of their choosing.

When registering, participants who select Wisconsin as their state will have a portion of the $36 entry fee go toward combating invasive species and supporting tree health in state parks and forests.

Every registrant receives a t-shirt, race bib, finisher medal, and sticker. Race packets begin shipping in March, and those who want guaranteed delivery before race dates should register by April 1. Group discounts are available for teams of 10 or more.

Participants can complete the 5K anytime outdoors between April 18th and April 26th, a window that includes Earth Day and Arbor Day.

The Run for the Trees program began in 2019 and continues to grow nationwide, inspired by Bob Ross’ love of nature and the outdoors.

More information and suggested routes at Wisconsin state parks and trails can be found on the DNR’s OutWiGo webpage. Registration is now open for the 2026 Happy Little 5K.
