Richard (Dick) Fischer, age 88, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at the Grandview Care Center in Blair, WI. He was born and raised in Stetsonville, WI and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls and Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.
In 1961, Dick was united in marriage to his loving wife Betty. He taught at Rib Lake and Benton before landing at Lincoln High School in Alma Center, WI in 1964. He was a Biology, Physical Education, and Outdoor Living teacher and Basketball Coach until he lost his sight in 1971. After losing his sight, Dick and Betty opened an archery shop in the backroom of their home while raising their family on Oakwood Lake in Merrillan, WI.
Dick was an active member of the Merrillan Lions Club, serving as Club President for many years. He was especially proud to act as an advocate and spokesperson for Leader Dogs for the Blind. Dick remained an avid outdoorsman, continuing to enjoy fishing, hunting, and golfing, despite his visual disability. He participated in the United States Blind Golfers Association and achieved a ranking of #5 in the nation. His hunting trophies include several white tail deer, a black bear, a brown bear and two antelope – one being designated a Pope and Young buck. The family extends a special thanks to Dick’s guiding eyes over the years: Harold “Diz” Kronenberg, Bob Eckles, Daryl Nelson, Jim Johnson, Bruce Kirn, Kim Loomis, and Dave Durni.
Dick was a fighter, living his entire adult life (and well beyond his life expectancy) with Type 1 Diabetes, overcoming the limitations of his blindness, and refusing to give up even after being diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia. He will remain in the hearts of his wife of 62 years, Betty; children, Patrice, Mary Beth (Mark), Michael (Ron), and Paul (Angela); grandchildren, Josh (Nikki), Ryan (Hannah), Nick, Brandon (Ashley), Heather (Dan), Natalie (Mitchell), Emma, and Luke; and great-grandchildren, Leo, Nolan, Myla, Miles, Max, Dayla, Brekynn, and Declan.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Bernice Fischer of Stetsonville, WI; brother Joel of Stevens Point, WI; newborn son Richard Jr. (Ricky); and his beautiful Leader Dogs, Cesar and Murphy.
A special thanks goes out to the teams at ProMedica Hospice and Grand View Care Center for providing exceptional care for Dick in his final years.
