Today, in Jackson County Circuit Court, the Honorable William Bratcher presiding, Daniel P. Johnson, 46, was sentenced to an overall prison term of 9 years, including 4.5 years initial confinement and 4.5 years of extended supervision, for convictions related to intentionally setting fires to another’s land, a class H felony, in Jackson County case number 2023CF109.  In summary, in the spring and summer of 2023, Jackson County experienced an unusually high number of wildland fires.  Arson was determined to be the cause, and investigation led to the arrest of Johnson in August 2023.  Agencies involved in the effort to locate, manage, and investigate the fires included the Wisconsin Department of Justice – Division of Criminal Investigation, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Jackson County Forestry, the Black River Falls Police Department, and the Black River Falls Fire Department.  Resources were also provided by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and neighboring fire departments and law enforcement agencies.  District Attorney Emily Hynek handled the prosecution for the State of Wisconsin.
