The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is opening reservations for sharp-tailed grouse viewing blinds at two northwest Wisconsin wildlife areas. Reservations for blinds at the Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area begin Saturday, January tenth, with viewing available from April through May. Additional blinds at Crex Meadows Wildlife Area open for reservations February first, with viewing starting March twenty-first.
The early-morning experience offers close-up views of the sharp-tailed grouse’s unique mating dance, along with chances to spot other species like sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, and northern harriers. Reservations fill quickly, but cancellations do happen.
The DNR says the pine and oak barrens at Namekagon and Crex are globally rare habitats and critical for species like the sharp-tailed grouse. More information is available through the Friends of Namekagon Barrens and Friends of Crex websites.
