Sharps Disposal Now Available at Monroe County Health Department

The Monroe County Health Department is now offering free medical sharps disposal at its office in Sparta.

Residents can drop off needles, syringes, and lancets Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 315 West Oak Street. The service is funded by opioid settlement dollars, so there is no fee. Sharps must be in a puncture-proof container, like a biohazard bin or thick plastic detergent bottle with a lid. Free sharps containers are also available at the front desk.

Officials stress that sharps should never be tossed in the trash, recycling, or flushed, since they pose serious risks to people, pets, and sanitation workers. Wisconsin law requires safe sharps disposal.

For questions, call the Monroe County Health Department at 608-269-8666. Additional drop-off sites can be found online through the DNR’s sharps collection map.
