A long time School Resource Officer with the Holmen Police Department is facing a sudden medical emergency and the community is coming together to support him. Officer Joe Hickey recently lost part of his lower leg after suffering a severe blood clot. Hickey, who’s served the department for 23 years, initially sought treatment for foot pain believed to be a stress fracture. When the pain worsened, doctors discovered a serious clot in his left leg. Despite multiple emergency surgeries, circulation could not be restored, and doctors were forced to amputate his leg at mid-calf.
Hickey is now focused on recovery and rehabilitation. A fundraiser has been established to help support him and his family via GoFundMe or Venmo. Find a link to donate on the Holmen Police Department’s Facebook page. A benefit event is planned for later this spring.
