Jackson County Behavioral Health once again brought The Lion Heart Experience to area schools
September 23-26. The Detroit group presented to middle school students in the Black River Falls,
Melrose-Mindoro, Osseo-Fairchild, Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan, Whitehall, and Blair-Taylor
school districts. In addition, high school students had the opportunity to have a presentation in the
Black River Falls, Melrose-Mindoro, Osseo-Fairchild, Whitehall, and Blair Taylor school districts, with
Jackson County Behavioral Health covering the cost of the BRF presentation and the district covering
the cost for the other high school presentations. They provided a 75 to 90 minute performance that
included hip-hop songs sung by the group. Middle school presentations included a talk on building
belonging and the difference between fake belonging and the real thing. High school presentations
included visual art and a talk about identity. The group shared examples of what shapes our identity.
Students learned that we all have experiences that that sometimes look like a mess in our life, which
was represented on the canvas, but we also have experiences that make positive marks on our
canvas or life. Students learned that we all have the potential to change our canvas/life and create a
beautiful masterpiece. Students watched as the canvas evolved over the performance to create a
beautiful masterpiece in the end that each school was able to keep so that students could be
reminded of the message. Students were able to talk with the performers after the show, as well as
get photos and autographs.
New this year was a community presentation held Wednesday, September 25th at the Tiger
Fieldhouse. The presentation drew a large crowd of community members of all ages. The
presentation included a blend of messaging from the middle and high school presentations and
included a canvas painting and hip-hop music as well. Adults in the room were encouraged to have
dreams of their own and to build a sense of worth if this is what they want for the young people in

their life. Attendees were able to visit and get pictures and autographs from the performers prior to
and after the show.
