Approximately one million Americans have a coronary event or surgery each year, but only one in five are referred to cardiac rehabilitation.

Tomah Health Cardiac Rehabilitation coordinator Shana Steele said her department staff is looking to improve those numbers after completing a national program called Take Heart.

Take Heart is a national initiative funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality aimed at increasing the use of cardiac rehabilitation referrals, enrollment and retention.

Steele said her department provides a certified cardiac rehabilitation program that helps to improve cardiovascular health following an acute heart episode like a heart attack or heart surgery.

She said the program includes exercise training, lifestyle and nutritional counseling, stress management and education to help make healthy lifestyle changes.

Information on the program is available online at tomahhealth.org
