Black River Falls celebrated a state champion Saturday afternoon as the city’s fire and police departments escorted gold-medalist Hannah Tubbs through town. Tubbs, a junior on the Black River Falls/Alma Center Lincoln/Blair-Taylor coop swimming team, swam to a first place finish in the 100 yard freestyle event Friday at the WIAA’s Division 2 Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet in Waukesha. Tubbs’ time of 52.24 was nearly two seconds faster than her sixth place finish in the state event last year. In the state’s 50 yard freestyle event, Hannah improved her time by one second from last year’s 13th place finish to take 2nd place this year with a time of 24.26. That was about a half second behind this year’s gold medalist Maggie Dickinson of Whitefish Bay. Whitefish Bay went on to take the team championship in Division 2.

In Saturday’s Division 1 results of area swimmers: Eau Claire Memorials’ Ava Instenes swam to a fourth place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle and she took fifth in the 100 yard freestyle. The La Crosse Central, La Crosse Logan, West Salem Coop’s 200 yard freestyle relay team of Camille Johnson, Johanna Hall, Avery Farmer, and Maggie Herath placed 19th. In the 100 yard backstroke, Stevens Point’s Klare Pilger took 3rd and Claire Lemke 23rd. Middleton took home the team title in Division 2.
