For Immediate Release

State officials are warning flood survivors to watch out for scammers looking to exploit recent storms and flooding. Wisconsin Emergency Management and the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection say fraudsters may pose as government workers, contractors, or charities in an effort to steal money or personal information.

FEMA and other disaster officials will never ask for money. If you’re contacted unexpectedly, verify the source before sharing any personal details.

Homeowners are also urged to avoid door-to-door contractors, get multiple estimates from established businesses, and insist on written contracts and lien waivers.

If you suspect fraud or identity theft, call the DATCP Consumer Protection Hotline at 800-422-7128. To verify FEMA visits or letters, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.
