Madison, Wisconsin – April 2, 2024 – Staff Sergeant (SSG) Lance Lauffer of the Wisconsin Army National
Guard has been recognized as the top recruiter in the state, being named the recipient of the prestigious
Director’s 54 Award.
The announcement came during a ceremony in Houston, Texas where SSG Lauffer was honored for his
exceptional dedication and outstanding achievements in recruiting.
The Director’s 54 Award is presented annually to the top recruiter in each of the United States’ 54 states and territories who demonstrates exemplary performance, commitment, and effectiveness in attracting new talent to the National Guard ranks. SSG Lauffer enlisted 17 recruits into the Wisconsin Army National Guard in the last year, and he competed among the state’s top recruiting talent to earn the honor. Command Sergeant Major Chris Beron says, “In our business, numbers matter, but being selected as Chief’s 54 is about much
more than the number. SSG Lauffer was also a stand-out in NCO and Recruiter competencies, leadership, and professionalism.”
LTC Shannon Hellenbrand, the Commander of the Recruiting and Retention Battalion, says, “We are
extremely proud of SSG Lauffer, not only for his top recruiting performance in 2023, but for his daily
contributions to his team the communities he serves. By helping young adults understand the opportunities and benefits of serving in the National Guard, he has established himself as a valued member of the communities he serves in Northwest Wisconsin – specifically, the Eau Claire area. His dedication to guiding prospective recruits through the enlistment process with integrity and professionalism has earned him the respect and
admiration of his colleagues and superiors alike. We are incredibly proud to have him as a member of our
team.”
Recruiting in today’s environment presents unique challenges, requiring innovative approaches and steadfast dedication.
SSG Lauffer adds, “As recruiters, we have to navigate through evolving societal dynamics and competing
career opportunities to attract and retain the best and brightest. Despite the obstacles, we stand resolute in our mission to build a strong and capable force ready to serve our nation and communities. I am deeply honored to receive the Director’s 54 Award. I am grateful for the opportunity to help young adults discover the fulfilling career paths available to them in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire recruiting team.”
As the recipient of the Director’s 54 Award, SSG Lauffer will continue to serve as a representative of the
Wisconsin National Guard, inspiring others to pursue excellence in their own endeavors and embodying the principles of leadership, integrity, and commitment.
