The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging caution as spring wildfire season begins, with nearly 170 wildfires already burning over 450 acres—four times higher than usual for this time of year.

Key factors contributing to wildfire risk:

Dry weather & gusty winds expected today and tomorrow.
Minimal rain chances over the weekend, with increased fire danger in the coming weeks.
Burning brush & debris is the leading cause of wildfires in Wisconsin.
Fire Prevention Measures:

Burn permit suspensions in place for several southern and central counties.
Burning permits required in DNR Protection Areas when there’s no snow cover.
Check daily restrictions online or by calling 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876) before burning.
Fire officials are actively staffing equipment, especially in areas where snow has melted but vegetation hasn’t greened up. Residents are urged to properly extinguish campfires, burn barrels, and ashes to prevent accidental fires.

For local burning regulations, check with municipal or fire department officials.
