The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) launched Fire Prevention Week with events focused on fire safety education in local communities. Secretary Dan Hereth emphasized the agency’s commitment to safety, noting the crucial role of fire departments and EMS in protecting residents. The week began at Milwaukee’s Survive Alive House, where second graders learned about fire dangers and prevention techniques. Hereth highlighted that a small percentage of fire calls account for most costs, underscoring the importance of prevention for saving lives and resources. In the afternoon, he presented a proclamation from Governor Tony Evers to the Wisconsin State Fire Inspectors Association (WSFIA) in recognition of their ongoing fire prevention efforts. Fire Prevention Week, first observed in 1925, honors the Great Chicago Fire and the Peshtigo Fire, with this year’s theme focusing on the importance of functional smoke alarms.
