On May 5, 1961, an 8-year-old Mark Lee sat in a one-room schoolhouse in Viroqua, Wisconsin, watching Alan Shepard become the first American in space. That moment sparked a dream that would propel him to the stars.

Lee pursued his goal with determination, attending the Air Force Academy and excelling as a fighter pilot before earning a master’s degree at MIT. Selected as a NASA astronaut in 1984, he became the first of his class assigned to a mission. Over four spaceflights, Lee played key roles in deploying the Magellan probe, conducting experiments aboard Spacelab-J, testing the SAFER jetpack, and servicing the Hubble Space Telescope.

After retiring in 2001, Lee dedicated himself to environmental conservation, planting over 140,000 trees on Wisconsin farmland. Passionate about inspiring youth, he has spoken to over 500,000 students nationwide, emphasizing teamwork and perseverance.

Despite traveling millions of miles in space, Lee’s heart remains in Wisconsin, where he continues to educate and inspire future explorers.

Mark Lee will be inducted into the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame.
