The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development has released new employment and unemployment figures for April.

According to preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment rates dropped over the month in all 13 metropolitan areas across Wisconsin.

Compared to a year ago, unemployment rates increased in 12 metro areas and remained unchanged in Appleton.

Among Wisconsin’s 35 largest cities, unemployment rates fell in 34 communities during April. Fitchburg was the only city where the rate stayed the same over the month.

Year-over-year, unemployment rates increased in 28 cities and held steady in seven others.

At the county level, unemployment rates declined in 71 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties during April. Menominee County’s rate was unchanged from March.

Compared to April of last year, unemployment rates increased in 48 counties, decreased in 15 counties, and remained the same in nine counties.
