Jacob A. Kulig, 92, of Independence, died on July 30, 2023, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse.
Jacob was born the youngest of 9 children on his family farm in Maule Coulee on March 25, 1931, to Joe P. and Nellie (Bautch) Kulig. He attended the Maule Coulee School from grades 1 to 4 and completed grades 5th through 8th at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School. He graduated from Independence High School on May 27, 1949.
After high school, Jacob lived and worked on the farm with his brother Harry and family until his enlistment into the United States Army in 1956. He proudly served 2 years and was honorably discharged on November 5, 1958.
Jacob was a very devout Catholic, praying daily and reciting the Rosary. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where he served with the Knights of Columbus.
When not working on the farm, Jacob was employed with the feed mills in Independence and Whitehall for 12 years. He was a bus driver for senior citizens for 14 years. He cared deeply for his nieces and nephews. Jacob had an impeccable memory for family history, dates and special events. He lived simply and faithfully, and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Jacob is survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Harry (Eleanore), Ralph (Victoria), Arthur (Irene), and Joe, Jr. (Bernice); sisters: Helen (Aloizy) Sylla, Caroline (Frank) Prokop, Patricia (Joseph) Gojermac, and Margaret (Albin) Woychik; and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father George Thayilkuzhitottu officiating. Family and friends are welcome for visitation one hour prior to the service at church. Burial with Military Honors presented by the Sura-Wiersgalla American Legion Post #186 will be in the church cemetery.
