Scammers are impersonating the IRS, falsely claiming taxpayers are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check to steal personal information. These phishing messages look official but contain fake links leading to malware or fraudulent forms.

The IRS has clarified that legitimate payments for those who missed the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns will be sent automatically by late January 2025—no action required.

To avoid scams:

The IRS never contacts taxpayers via text, email, or social media.
Verify IRS communications through official mail or IRS.gov.
Don’t click suspicious links or respond to urgent requests.
Report scams to phishing@irs.gov and BBB.org/ScamTracker.
Stay informed and protect your personal information. Visit BBB.org/ScamTips for more fraud prevention advice.
